CANDOVER, three parishes
The parishes take their name from the stream whose name (following Ekwall)
may have been from hypothetical British 'Caniodubri'='beautiful waters'.
The three specifiers come into use for the separate parishes/manors in the
13th century. Preston Candover is 1262 'Prestecandevere' clearly hypothetical
Old English 'Preostacandefer'='priests' Candover'. Gover speculates that the
monks of Southwick Priory are referred to. Domesday Book states merely (29,2)
that 'clerici' hold it and (69,8) that Edwin the priest holds a virgate from the
king there. From 1255 forms like 'Preston Candovere' are found, suggesting an
alternative name deriving from hypothetical 'Preostatun'='priests' farm',
therefore perhaps parallel with the hypothetical 'Cildatun' mooted above. The
late form 1442 'Preston in Candeveresdene'='Preston in the valley of the
Candover' seems to be unique.
Either the 'tun-' forms are rationalizations of earlier forms in the genitive
plural '-a' or they represent alternative Old English place names which are not
recorded till Middle English times. This matter is still to be resolved.

Cobbett 1830
... we chose to wind down through Upton-Gray, Preston-Candover,
Chilton-Candover, Brown-Candover, then down to Ovington, and into Winchester by
the north entrance. ...
... Chalk is the favourite soil of the yew-tree; and at Preston-Candover
there is an avenue of yew-trees, probably a mile long, each tree containing, as
nearly as I can guess, from twelve to twenty feet of timber, which, as the
reader knows, implies a tree of considerable size. They have probably been a
century or two in growing; but, in any way that timber can be used, the timber
of the yew will last, perhaps, ten times as long as the timber of any other tree
that we grow in England.
